Help

The Staff General Dentist serves as a practicing dental provider that performs a full range of professional dental procedures in connection with the treatment of commonly encountered dental diseases or dental health problems requiring standard corrective, restorative, or preventive measures.

The staff general dentist shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services. He/she is fully mentally and physically capable of performing these essential functions of a general dentist without impairment. Specifically, the provider should possess the procedural expertise and competency to perform the following:

  1. Make oral and radiographic examinations of the oral cavity.
  2. Diagnose pathological or irregular era( conditions.
  3. Administer local anesthesia,
  4. Perform routine and complex restoration of teeth.
  5. Perform simple and complex extractions of teeth,
  6. Perform alveoloplasty and other routine surgical procedures.
  7. Perform prosthetic dentistry to include immediate dentures, full dentures, partial dentures, crowns and fixed bridge work.
  8. Perform routine endodontic procedures on single and multi-canal teeth.
  9. Perform routine and surgical periodontal procedures.

Work Schedule: May vary, but typically covers normal operating hours (Monday - Friday, 7:30a.m. - 4:00p.m.), not to exceed 40 hours per week. Candidates may be required to work alternate shifts, be on call, work weekends and/or holidays as patient care and needs of the service require.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Dentist Basic Requirements

  • Education: A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
  • Residency or Comparable Experience: Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
  • License: Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience: Will be determined by management.

Physical Requirements:
Light lifting, 15 pounds and over; light carrying under 15 pounds walking (3 hours); standing (3 hours); kneeling (1 hour); repeated bending (0.25 hour); Climbing (1 hour), Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; and hearing (aid permitted). Mental and Emotional Stability. See VA Handbook and Directive 5019.

Education
